RAF Target Maths
RAF Target is a successful and popular website for students
aged 11–16 and their teachers.
In the maths area, six RAF personnel guide students through a series of stimulating
curriculum-linked maths activities. The site boasts a range of exciting and
challenging maths tasks set within the context of real-life RAF jobs.
Teachers’ notes, curriculum maps and certificates are provided in the
teachers’ area.

Maths Mission CD-ROM
The Maths Mission CD-ROM illustrates the practical use of maths through real-life
scenarios found on a virtual RAF base.
Students aged 14–16 are presented with a choice of ten zones on the RAF
base that cover different areas of life in the RAF, from air-sea rescue to catering.
Each of the zones has a mission which students can complete by answering a series
of maths problems. Video clips bring the scenario to life and interactive puzzles
and quizzes stimulate the students’ interest.
There is also material for teachers, including guidance notes and printable
certificates for successfully completed missions.
You can use the contact form to order a free copy
of the CD-ROM.

Maths workshop
Every year the Maths Mission workshop, delivered to lower-ability students
aged 14–16 by two qualified teachers, goes on tour for five weeks.
During the workshop, students complete seven curriculum-linked activities.
Each activity will focus on a different maths topic presented within an RAF
theme. The activities will include:
- Reaction Times Activity, a laptop-based game which tests
pupils’ reaction times under different conditions
- Field Hospital Activity, in which pupils use investigative
measures to work out prescription codes in an RAF Field Hospital
- Catering Activity, in which pupils use algebra to plan
and co-ordinate a meal for personnel on an airbase
- Cargo Activity, in which pupils work out how best to load
a cargo bay
- Observation Activity, in which pupils identify aircraft
and specific shapes from an aerial photograph
- Health and Safety Activity, in which pupils use decibel
meters to measure and estimate noise levels
- Navigation Activity, in which pupils plot the co-ordinates
and arrange the flight plan for an important mission.

interactive RAF Real-life Science CD-ROM explores core physics topics:

- Moments
- Air resistance
- Circuits
- Sound
Students are asked to undertake four exciting missions in order to help set
up a new RAF airfield and carry out an explorative operation. Real RAF personnel
guide students through each challenge, helping them use relevant science to
complete the tasks.
The CD-ROM includes a teachers’ section, with guidance on how to get

Science workshop
Every year the Science workshop, delivered to students aged 11–16 by
two qualified teachers, goes on tour for five weeks.
During the workshop, students complete four curriculum-linked activities. Each
activity focuses on a different science topic presented within a ‘real
life’ RAF context. Students are invited to help establish a temporary
RAF base. The activities include:
- Field Kitchen – in which pupils will be asked to
consider the health and dietary requirements of personnel on the base
- Field Hospital – in which pupils will need to analyse
their own physical fitness and make decisions about the suitability of various
personnel for specific physical tasks
- Helipad – in which pupils will need to build various
electrical circuits in preparation for the development of a landing area
- Base Camp – in which pupils will need to analyse
data and consider the logistics for the best distribution of personnel and
equipment around the area.
